Varadharaja Mudaliar (1890-1959) was an Indian businessman and philanthropist who made significant contributions to the development of Chennai (then Madras) in the early 20th century. He was born in a business family in Madras and started his own business at a young age.
Mudaliar was known for his support of education, healthcare, and social welfare activities. He established several schools, including the famous P.S. High School in Chennai. He also contributed to the establishment of the Adyar Cancer Institute and the Government General Hospital in Chennai.
Mudaliar was a member of the Madras Legislative Council and was appointed to the Madras University Senate. He was also a member of the Indian National Congress and actively participated in the Indian independence movement.
Mudaliar was awarded the title of "Rao Bahadur" by the British government in recognition of his contributions to society. He was also honored with the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian awards, in 1956.
Mudaliar passed away in 1959, leaving behind a legacy of philanthropy and public service.
